Hot air balloon ride in Luxor Egypt

Our first hot air balloon ride was an amazing experience.


Woke up early before 4am to wait for the transport to the east band of Nile. There were about 20 passengers sharing a balloon. Our pilot was very experienced and spoke well English. The balloon took off very smoothly, and before I realized we're already up in the cool and fresh morning air.


The weather was excellent, the wind was calm and gentle. We were so lucky to witness the sun rising slowly across the River Nile. It's so beautiful my limited vocabulary failed to describe it.
The sky was getting brighter as we floating smoothly in the air. We could see more clearly now the spectacular views of picturesque landscape and blue sky. We floated slowly over the Nile, the Safari desert, vegetable farms, and Kings' Valley which was an important historical ruin of ancient Egypt. 


After 50 minutes in the air we finally landed softly on the desert.

Ecotrail Putrajaya 2019

Running Ecotrail Putrajaya 2019 wasn't in my initial plan at all. One fine day at the end of September my friend Steven Ong, a well known elite ultra runner, contacted me and invited me to join.  I've been running road races for 10 years, but have never had the courage to try any trail yet, let alone the ultra distance of 50km.

I contemplated Steven's offer for almost three days before I finally gathered enough courage to sign it up. By then it's only less than a month to the race, and I was totally unprepared. And I didn't even have a pair of trail running shoes!

After gotten my trail shoes with a discounted price of RM149 (Asics Sonama), I started my trail training at a small hill near my house. Every evening after work, I trained for about an hour trekking up and down the hill. Besides, I also trained at Bear Hill in a couple of times. One week before Ecotrail Putrajaya, I joined my very first 8km trail run. Which I managed to complete without much difficulty.

Ecotrail Putrajaya 50km category was flagged off at 7am at Taman Botani. Together with another one hundred runners, I started slowly and with persistent pace.

The first 10km was running the path and trails around Taman Botani, which were generally manageable. After 10km mark the sun came out and weather was getting very hot. We ran along the main roads of Putrajaya under the scorching sun to reach WS2 at 21km mark.

After refilled my water bag I continued my journey to climb up to a hilly road in a very quiet park. I ran along the deserted road happily oblivious of a signage indicating a turn into the jungle. By the time I realized I must have missed the route, I was quite panic and took out my phone to check my location. The location map confirmed that I had overshot for almost a km.

Devastatingly, I turned and slowly ran back. A worker in the park offered to drive me back with his motorbike, but I declined. After about a km I finally found my correct way which was a small trail leading to the jungle.

I've never thought such jungle existed in the morden city of Putrajaya. The terrain was not especially steep and technical, but slippery after a whole week rain. I struggled quite a lot in the jungle until I finally reached the WS3 located at 30km.

After a brief stop, the journey became even tougher. After miles of very steep hills I reached a small town near Kajang. The time was about 1pm and the heat was almost unbearable. An ice cream vendor passing and deliberately slowed down. I was so craving for the sweet cold ice cream, but unfortunately I forgotten to bring some cash.

Then at km-38 I bumped into a herd of buffaloes by the lake. There must be more than a hundred of them, and it's my first encounter with such a big buffaloes. The "cowboy" repeatedly chanting "mandi mandi mandi!"  And to my amusement, the buffaloes jumping one by one into the lake.

At km-40 was the final WS4, lunch was served. There were rice, curry chicken, fried eggs, vegetable and sambal. I was too exhausted I only managed to swallowed a small scoop of rice with two eggs.
"What doesn't break you makes you stronger." My good friend Lee Lee sent me this message. I pondered it while continued fighting, and I just couldn't agree more about it.

I always learned and thrived via distance running. Approaching 50, maybe physically I'm not as strong as the younger me, but my mental is strengthening with age.

The rain was getting more heavy. Luckily the remaining route was road and no more hills to climb. At 47km I received a text message from my wife, informing that she and our two children were waiting at the finish point.

Be it a 5km or 100km, finishing a race is always the most exhilarating moment.Finishing Ecotrail Putrajaya 2019 in the rain was especially meaningful and comforting for me, knowing that my wife and children were awaiting at the finish line.

It's tough, but the tough is what makes it great.

Ecotrail Putrajaya 50km is my first attempt of ultra trail running. It's probably my toughest race so far.

As a newbie on the ultra trail, I made a mistake for missing a turn in the jungle and hence got a bonus of extra 2km. There's also over distance for 1km, so I ended up running 53km in total.

Anyway, I was happy and proud of myself for completing this challenge. Will I be doing any more ultra trail run? Well, I really have no answer at the moment.

沉默的病人 The Silent Patient

當你費解心機追尋的真相最終被揭開時,你是否有面對它的勇氣?


The Silent Patient 是最近在英文閱讀圈子裡廣受矚目和引起諸多評論的一部的心理驚悚小說,是英國籍作者的第一部小說,於2019年出版。由於好奇這本書有什麼特別之處,我買了一本,並在三天內讀完。

故事情節說是一個男人在家中身中槍斃命,而他的畫家太太Alicia被發現時握著槍在屍體旁邊,而所有的證據都指向她是殺夫的兇手。然而Alicia卻從此不再說一句話,也不和任何人溝通。不管是被警方盤問或在法院審訊時,都沉默不語。於是她把裁定有罪,但因被診斷為精神病患而被關進療養院。
六年過去了。療養院新來的心理治療師Theo對Alicia這病例特別關注,也用盡心機的希望能讓她再次開口道出案發當天的詳情。然而,當這沉默的病人封鎖的記憶終於一步步被打開時,它揭露的真相又是不是所有人能承受的呢?

作者本身當過編劇,所以書中情節安排也很有電影常用的敘述手法。這種內容也是電影愛拍的心理驚悚類,而聽說已有電影公司買下版權了。

作為第一部出版的小說能用這成績也很難能可貴了。但若要吹毛求疵,我覺得小說的文筆一般,故事不夠緊湊,同時某些情節頗不合理。

油菜花開


五月是油菜花開的季節。

飛機準備降落慕尼黑之際,我們已看到平坦的地面上一大片又一大片整齊的黃色方塊,猶如一張張柔軟的棉被覆蓋在綠色的草原上。

後來搭乘火車在德奧及捷克各城市間遊走,車窗外也不斷的出現這些黃色的花田,連綿起伏到天邊,美得如斯夢幻。

起初不知道那是什麼花。
網上問谷哥,言是油菜花;
只在此季開,花深不知處。

油菜花可用來榨取食用油或飼料,栽種簡單,生長期快。在德奧及歐洲各地廣泛栽種,一般在冬春休耕期間播種,兩個月便長出美麗的黃色小花。

而五月是油菜花田最美的季節。我們誤打誤撞,卻又何其有幸的趕上了這一趟花季。

有時候,少了刻意的安排,卻讓人有另一番美麗的邂逅。
驚喜總在無意間出現。學會了“隨意而安”,心境會更平和,人生也會更開心些。

薩爾斯堡到哈修塔特交通攻略 (From Salzburg to Hallstatt by bus)

奧地利的哈修塔特(Hallstatt)是個十分美麗的小鎮,依山面湖,景色迷人。對許多到德國南部和奧地利的旅客來說,這都是個必遊之地。



無論是從德國或奧地利出發,欲搭乘公共交通到哈修塔特都必須經過薩爾斯堡(Salzburg) 。而從薩爾斯堡至哈修塔特搭乘公共交通的話,基本上有以下三種方法:

1)巴士+巴士+巴士
2)巴士+火車+渡輪
3)火車+火車+渡輪

而我個人經過一番比較和實際經驗後,認為最省錢也最方便的,還是第一種方法,即:巴士+巴士+巴士。

要搭乘三趟巴士,看似很複雜,其實很簡單。建議大家先下載奧地利鐵道(OBB)的手機應用程序App),這是自助遊奧地利必備的App,方便查找巴士及火車的時間和班次等資訊,還可以用來購買車票。

第一趟巴士:150號(從 Salzburg 至 Bad Ischl)

在薩爾斯堡中央車站大門前的左邊F月台等車,上車才跟司機買票。告訴司機是要到Hallstatt的,車資是14.60歐元(2019年價錢),一票到底,中途換乘巴士就不需再買票了。

巴士也會途經薩爾斯堡市區的好幾個候車站,如果住宿地點離中央車站較遠的旅客,也可以在附近的候車站上下車。途經的候車站和到站時間都可在奧鐵OBB App查詢。

上車後跟司機買票,一票到底。


這一趟路程的風景很美,左邊是湖,右邊是山。一路看風景,湖光山色,美不勝收。我去的時候是五月春天,山峰上積雪未融。一大片翠綠的草地和深綠的湖水,平躺在白色的雪山之下。三幾間農莊錯落有致的點綴其間,在陽光下閃着柔光。

150號巴士並非直達車,而是區間巴士,乘客當中有很多當地居民在中途上下車。由於需服務當地居民,所以它會繞道而行,穿梭於各個小鄉鎮。但也因為這樣,我們得以欣賞到各個小村莊之美麗。

飽覽了約1小時20分的美麗風景後,巴士抵達終點站 Bad Ischl 小鎮。

第二趟巴士:542號(從 Bad Ischl 至 Hallstatt Gosaumuhle)
Bad Ischl 是個很小的車站,和火車站相連,如果要轉乘火車的話可以在這裡等車。火車站內有免費廁所,否則到了Hallstatt 的公廁收費每趟一歐元。

搭乘542號巴士大約30分鐘後,會到達一個湖邊的候車亭 Hallstatt Gosaumuhle,這時司機會喊欲到Hallstatt 的乘客下車換乘543號巴士。

第三趟巴士:543號(H. Gosaumuhle 至 Hallstatt Lahn)
542 和 543 號是互相等待的,司機會確保銜接的巴士到了才會開走,所以不必擔心錯過巴士。
這趟巴士只走一站路,不到10分鐘就穿過隧道把乘客送到Hallstatt Lahn 站,也就是美麗的Hallstatt 小鎮的入口處了!

不到十分鐘,543 號巴士就把我們送到哈修塔特了。

萬金石馬拉松

萬金石馬拉松是台灣唯一獲國際田總認證的銀標馬拉松賽,每年三月由新北市政府舉辦。沿著台灣島的北海岸線跑,跑者們一邊欣賞著一望無際的大海和遠處的青山,一邊感受著初春凜冽的寒風迎面吹來,確實是一場難得的體驗。

這場馬拉松的名字有點特別。而為什麼叫做“萬金石”,卻是直到我跑了之後才恍然。開跑地點是在一個離台北市大約一小時車程,叫萬里的小鎮,途經金山和石門兩個鎮後再折返,因而各取三個小鎮的名字而成了萬金石馬拉松。

由於這賽會很受歡迎,每年都採用抽籤報名的方式,且抽中的機率不到五成。幸好主辦方很歡迎外國跑者參加,不但報名費和台灣朋友一樣,還能直接報名不需抽籤。

為了備戰這場馬拉松,我在幾個月前就開始控制體重,並成功減了約5公斤。同時也定時做長跑LSD訓練,體能和心態也調整得不錯,自認已接近2013年時期的最佳狀態。然而並沒有太大野心要破PB,畢竟年紀不小,很難再跟六、七年前的自己比賽了。

賽前的星期五早上的班機從吉隆坡飛台北,我已多次來台,所以並不陌生。搭了新開通的機場捷運到台北車站,預訂的住宿就在一箭之地。之後到位於台北市板橋領取參賽物質和號碼布,以及在報名時一併購買的從台北市到賽場的接駁車票。

說句題外話。九年前和家人到台北旅遊時辦過台北悠遊卡(如我們的TnG的預付卡),這次出發前無意間翻找出來,想試試看還能否使用。沒想到九年沒用過的悠遊卡竟然還能使用,而且裡頭的餘額還在。而本國的TnG卡只不過幾年沒用就被作廢了,連餘額也無法拿回。




比賽當天早上三點半就到了台北車站排隊上車,司機似乎不太清楚賽場的確切位置,一個多小時後我們才到會場。寄存衣物和做了賽前熱身後,大家便很興奮的站在起跑點等待了。

六點半準時起跑。開跑不到五百米進跑進了超過一公里長的隧道,結果手錶的GPS功能完全失靈,即使離開隧道後也無法還原測量距離的功能。幸好主辦方在沒一公里都置放距離標識,因此整場比賽我都沒有看手錶的距離顯示。

我跑在賽道上,發現這裡視野開闊,景色優美,這是在其他城市馬拉松賽會中不常見的。這是一個臨海的山區,右邊是一望無際的大海,左邊是起伏的山巒。沿海公路建在這山巒之間,遠遠望去,猶如幾個並排的麥當勞M型標誌。

一場馬拉松最令人動容的便是當地居民的參與和貢獻。馬來西亞的路跑賽很少見到居民會站在路邊為參賽者打氣,但台灣不一樣。沿途我們跑過很多小鎮和村子,路兩旁站滿男女老幼很熱情的揮舞著標語歡呼吶喊。還有個小區的里長(類似我們這裡的村長)帶領著居民搖旗喝彩,令人難忘。為何我知道他是那裡的里長呢?因為他身上就掛了一個彩帶,寫著的“里長某某某”幾個大字呀!真可愛。

前一晚下了一場雨,海風吹來天微冷,約20C。天上雲層多,太陽只是偶爾露露臉。

我以6分鐘的配速相當平穩的跑,大約7、8公里到了獅頭山,也是整個路段最高點。兩旁群眾歡呼聲中,我卻感覺膀胱越來越滿了。想到還有好長的路程,只好稍停了近兩分鐘上個廁所。

上過廁所感覺身輕如燕,加緊腳步繼續趕路。2小時06分到了21公里的折返點,感覺還好,繼續穩步前進。
我喜歡主辦單位的用心,他們在每一公里的標識牌寫了些蠻有趣的標語。老實說,期待著下一公里的標語成了推動我前進的動力。

以往我的馬拉松撞牆通常會在第28、32、36、38公里處發生,所以對我來說這是幾個我必須要越過的坎。我覺得跑馬拉松是件快樂的事,而全程無撞牆平穩的跑完更是幸福美滿。我寧可不追求最佳成績,只求讓我順利的跑完。




然而過了32公里就是一段又一段的上坡路。而更糟的是冷冽的海風似乎迎面吹來,感覺到似乎快被吹走了。這時候雖然覺得還有氣力,但卻無可避免的掉速了。咬緊牙根一步一腳印,終於爬上了最高點的獅頭山。之後的一段下山路我奮力的跑,以其追回流逝的時間。

賽會有特備了精英選手專用的補給站,每站補給枱插上各國國旗以作識別。我看到有馬來西亞的國旗,很感動。於是每次跑過這些補給站時我都伸手輕觸我們的國旗,當作給自己打氣。

一番奮戰後,我們朝著一座大山跑去,而山腹間的隧道隱隱在望。因為知道只要穿過這條一公里多的隧道,終點就在前頭了。於是我抖擻精神,大步流星的跑進隧道中。

英諺有云:隧道的盡頭總有光。當我在隧道中終於看到光明的隧道盡頭時,心中的興奮可是無語名狀。看到好多位攝影師在隧道出口等著,當然要擺出自以為最帥的姿勢啦!

衝線的成績是4:24:16,只比我在六年前創下的最佳慢了不到兩分鐘。開心呀!




這一場馬拉松全程都覺得狀態良好,得歸功於自己在體能和心理都有較充分的準備。幾個月來的瘦身有了明顯效果,賽前一星期也非常小心飲食。而平日也頗自律的訓練,賽前參考其他跑友的經歷而對賽道有了基本的心理準備。

當你為一個目標而堅持不懈時,不管最後的成績如何,那過程本身就已如朝聖般美得讓人動容。而當汗水蒸發後,留下的將是一道道豐富你人生歷練的軌跡。

而這些年來馬拉松教我的事,讓我成長,也讓我堅強。
